Fifty-four counties are known to have been mapped between 1856 and 1888, although 45 of these were produced between 1859 and 1869. Thirty-two are of Ontario and the rest were spread throughout eastern Canada. Five Ontario county maps were revised to produce second editions.
As settlement patterns shifted over time, many surveyed townships moved between the different counties and districts. Some administrative records created by district authorities, such as marriage registers, include post-1849 information.

County boundaries shifted somewhat, although less than the district boundaries. District boundaries underwent several changes in southern Ontario. In 1801 there were seven districts. By 1855 there were twenty districts, although at that time several of the districts included only one county.
