"A Bird That Whistles (Corrina, Corrina)" is based on a traditional folk song, but more notably, it's based on traditional Joni Mitchell songs.
Thanks to the way these songs are buried beneath layers of reverb and gloss, you've got to listen harder to get to their heart - and the heart of Chalk Mark beats perhaps more strongly than that of any other Mitchell album.

But you know you're in trouble when the two best songs on a Joni Mitchell album are covers, f'crissakes; in this case, "Corinna, Corrina" (called here "A Bird That Whistles") and "Cool Water," Bob Nolan's old Sons Of The Pioneers chestnut.
'Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm' starts off pretty decently but as led off by the title, it thaws into nothingness. Quieter and gentler than the rest of her 80s output, it kicks off with soothing production and good enough lyrics (though they don't compare to what she once did).
