Stratford Hall is a historic house museum near Lerty in Westmoreland County, Virginia. It was the plantation house of four generations of the Lee family of Virginia (with descendants later to expand to Maryland and other states).
Aug 26, 2024 · Stratford Hall is a 1,500-acre plantation located in Westmoreland County on the Potomac River. The politician and planter Thomas Lee purchased the land for Stratford in 1717; although no records exist to indicate when the house was built, construction likely began in 1738 and was completed sometime in the 1740s.
Stratford Hall is my favorite day-trip destination on Virginia's Northern Neck. It's known as Robert E. Lee's birthplace, but it is far more than just another shrine to Lee. The credit for this architectural beauty goes to R. E. Lee's ancestors--the prominent Lee family.

Built by Thomas Lee in the 1730s, Stratford Hall Plantation is the birthplace of Robert E. Lee and was home to four generations of the Lee family, including the only brothers to sign the Declaration of Independence: Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee.
