Umeå, town and capital of Västerbotten län (county), northeastern Sweden. It lies on the left bank of the Umeå River near the Gulf of Bothnia. It has long been an educational and cultural centre for northern Sweden. In 1622 it was incorporated by Gustav II Adolf.
