Dec 23, 2005 · The Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1886, and the town prospered, becoming a center for banking and commerce and a social hub for farming and ranching families in the Kittitas Valley. Prosperity enabled Ellensburg to quickly rebuild after the fire of July 4, 1889.

1. The Early Days in Ellensburgh. Ellensburg, originally named Ellensburgh for the wife of town founder John Alden Shoudy, was founded in 1871. The town grew rapidly in the 1880s following the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway and was officially incorporated on November 26, 1883.
