Harold Edward Stassen (April 13, 1907 – March 4, 2001) was an American Republican Party politician, military officer, and attorney who was the 25th governor of Minnesota from 1939 to 1943. He was a leading candidate for the Republican nomination for president of the United States in 1948.
In 1935, Stassen helped establish the Young Republican League of Minnesota. A year later, he was elected its first chairman. He sought the Republican nomination for governor in 1938. Stassen’s brand of Republicanism was progressive and forward-thinking.
In 1937, Stassen announced his intention to run for governor of Minnesota. With the support of his Young Republicans, Stassen successfully wrested power from the state’s old-guard Republicans. When he was elected the next year at the age of thirty one, Stassen became the youngest governor in Minnesota’s history.
