Jun 8, 2016 · The village of Moncks Corner in St. John’s Berkeley Parish derived its name from Thomas Monck, who in 1735 purchased one thousand acres in the parish and established Mitton Plantation. Monck’s plantation was located at a fork where the Charleston Road intersected with the Cherokee Path.
The town of Moncks Corner was chartered on December 26, 1885, and incorporated December 15, 1909. Moncks Corner was granted the trademark "Capital of Santee Cooper Country" by the South Carolina Secretary of State September 9, 1999, and again October 21, 2004.

Monks Corner 1735-1857 While South Carolina was an English colony several towns were established in Berkeley County that thrived for a time and then were abandoned. In 1696 a town named Dorchester was established in the southwestern part of the county, on the north side of Ashley River.
At the time in Charleston District (county), Moncks Corner was first granted a U.S. Post Office on March 15, 1838, and its first Postmaster was Mr. Phillip J. Porcher. On January 22, 1839, the Post Office Department officially changed the name of this town to Black Oak.
