The hundred of Bucklow was an ancient division of the historic county of Cheshire, in northern England. It was known to have been in existence at least as early as 1260, and it was formed from the earlier Domesday hundreds of Bochelau and Tunendune.
The DB hundred of Bochelau included Northenden, Snelson and Great Warford now in Macclesfield hundred 1 234, 93, 104, but not that part of the modern Bucklow hundred west of Lymm, High Legh, Mere, Tabley Superior, Pickmere and Wincham.This area was Tunendun (e) Hd '1086 DB, 'Tuna's hill', from the OE pers.n. Tuna and dūn, the meeting-place of which is unidentified, cf. Halton Hundred infra.
The Bucklow Hundred is one of the hundreds of Cheshire, located in the north of the county. It is bounded to the north by the River Mersey; to the east by Macclesfield Hundred; to the south by Northwich Hundred; and to the south-west by Eddisbury Hundred. During the Medieval wars it is highly likely that Knutsford provided archers to the nationally renowned 'Cheshire Bowmen'. Just after the battle of Agincourt a survey of the Bucklow Hundred taken in 1417 AD showed that almost a quarter of Cheshire bowmen came from this area making up 107 out of the 439 recorded. 2.
