was founded in 1984 by Rajkumar Gupta, and found immediate success. His sons were fans of comic books, and soon persuaded him to assist them in founding a new comic book company, Raj Comics, which started publishing in 1986. A variety of genres were represented, including superheroes, previously rare in Indian Comics. The first superhero of this new universe was the snake-themed Nagraj, who is still considered to be Raj Comics most iconic superhero.
Raj Comics was quite successful during the 80's and 90's, and over the years they introduced many new superheroes, that had many solo issues (unlike western comics, the comics of Raj Comics are not organized into volumes and series, but appear to be assigned numbers in a 'General' and 'Special' category). Super Commando Dhruva and Doga appear to be the most famous of these (aside from Nagraj).
Indian comics went into a steep decline from 1997 onwards, but Raj Comics was able to keep publishing, although new issues for many of the characters thinned out. In 2001, the first team Brahmand Rakshak (ब्रह्माण्ड रक्षक) was founded. In 2015 Raj Comics launched digital distribution using a custom app.
In late 2020, for unknown reasons, Raj Comics split up into 3 companies, one for each of the sons of Rajkumar Gupta. This has resulted in the timeline for at least some characters (like Nagraj) also being split into 2, from Raj Comics by Sanjay Gupta and Raj Comics by Manoj Gupta (Manish Gupta is sticking to reprints).
