Mr. Philip "Phil" Gilbert is the main antagonist of the E4 comedy series The Inbetweeners and a minor character in the 2011-2014 film series.

He is the corrupt, sadistic and misanthropic year head for the 6th years of Rudge Park Comprehensive who takes a particular disliking to the leading protagonists and often abuses his position of power to intimidate and belittle them.

    TV Series

Throughout the series, Mr. Gilbert makes it clear that he is an unwelcoming and intimidating man who often badmouths and ridicules his students, seeing them as nothing more than brainless idiots and taking full advantage of situations where he can punish them for anything. He has a specifically bad relationship with William McKenzie, Simon Cooper, Jay Cartwright and Neil Sutherland, and strangely hates Will the most, despite him being a rather responsible and intelligent student; this is evident from his blackmailing and physiological abuse towards Will of whom he gives to far more than any other character in the series. By the end of the series he is relieved to finally get rid of the sixth form students although he keeps his job within the school and takes on another year of sixth formers who he presumably treats in the same way.

    Movies

Gilbert's roles in the movies are rather small, with him only briefly appearing in the first film during the farewell to the sixth formers, openly expressing his happiness that they are leaving and no longer being responsible for them, and later when he is married to Will's mother in the sequel.

Mr. Gilbert is a no-nonsense, sadistic, rude, sarcastic and cruel man who cares very little for his pupils and clearly hates his own job. He is often seen frustrated and impatient with the pupils and even their parents on occasions and cares very little about school events, charities, etc.

Gilbert is viewed as an intimidating person by most of his students, and is often joked to have a large penis due to his intimidating and large presence. He is also known for his heavy wit and sarcasm and usually roasts his students on a daily basis.

He also doesn't care about bullying and often even harasses and torments his own pupils, even preparing to punish Will McKenzie for "grassing" on one occasion; this is also shown when Will's mother Polly attempted to get Will a new work experience placement after the workers at his current one threw him in lake with nothing but his underwear on, Gilbert couldn't contain himself upon hearing this story and laughed uncontrollably.

He also has a clear attraction to Will's mother and even becomes engaged to her in The Inbetweeners 2, much to the Will's horror.

    • Matt Smith of Doctor Who fame actually auditioned to play Will and made it down to the last two, but ended up losing out to Simon Bird because he was a bit too handsome and heroic.
    • Greg Davies, who played Mr. Gilbert, was a real-life teacher for 13 years before becoming a stand-up comedian and actor – so he was perfectly trained for the role.
    • One of his students once nominated him for a “Teacher of the Year” award, and on the four-page submission document wrote only: “Mr Davies is a well good laugh, and he don’t make us do no work.”
    • Across all three seasons, there are only two scenes which do not feature any of the Inbetweeners. The first is when Mr. Gilbert talks to himself after the prom in the final episode of season one, and the other is in the second episode of season two, when Will’s mum and Neil’s dad meet Mr. Gilbert about their sons’ work experience.
