  2. This simple stone building dates from about 1250 and was built by William de Ferrers, Earl of Derby. Belper was a village in Duffield Frith, one of many Royal Forests that were the hunting grounds for the kings of mediaeval England. De Ferrers built the chapel so that people could have a simple place to worship which was close to their homes.
