In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Buxted like this: BUXTED, a village and a parish in Uckfield district, Sussex. The village adjoins the Brighton and TunbridgeWells rail, 1½ mile NE of Uckfield; and has a post office under Uckfield, a r. station, and a fair on 31 July.
Buxted Buxted is an East Sussex village on the edge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just over a mile north of the small town of Uckfield.. Buxted is unusual insofar as nearly all the old village was uprooted or deserted, not because of plague or other disaster, but because of the whim of the the then prime minister, Robert Banks Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool.
The parish church (St Margaret) within the gates of Buxted Park marks the site of the mediaeval settlement; the Georgian house was damaged by fire in 1940 (BE (E) p299). The village appears to have moved to its present site in the mid-C18 (3 p34), though the Sharpe Collection drawing of 1802 shows houses around the church.
