Solomon Hersh Frees (June 22, 1920 – November 2, 1986), better known as Paul Frees, was an American actor, comedian, impressionist, and vaudevillian. He is known for his work on Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , Walter Lantz , Rankin/Bass and Walt Disney theatrical cartoons during the Golden Age of Animation , and for providing the voice of Boris Badenov in The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show . The voice used for Francis in the first six films was Chill Wills, a man with the perfect bray of a voice to use for the character. As for the seventh and final film the main actor was Mickey Rooney and the voice of Francis was done by Paul Frees. Frees wasn’t exactly Chill Wills but was close enough.
This last film in the popular "Francis" series marked two major changes: 'Mickey Rooney' replaced Donald O'Conner, and Paul Frees replaced Chill Wills (as the voice of Francis). Notes Francis in the Haunted House was the seventh and last film in the "Francis" series.
Aug 22, 2013 · My introduction to the series was a 1960s showing on an Indy TV station of the last film in the series, “Francis in the Haunted House,” released in 1956. My view is no doubt skewed by the fact that this, the first in the series that I remember seeing, had a different star – Mickey Rooney – and a different voice – veteran voice actor Paul Frees – replacing Wills as the voice of Francis.

Chill Wills wanted more money than Universal were willing to play, so the studio auditioned various voice actor replacements, including Mel Blanc, [4] before settling on Paul Frees. [5] The film made no attempt at explaining why Francis left original sidekick Peter Stirling.
