The Hofburg (German: [hoːf.buʁk]) is the former principal imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty in Austria. Located in the centre of Vienna, it was built in the 13th century and expanded several times afterwards. It also served as the imperial winter residence, as Schönbrunn Palace was the summer residence.

Aug 18, 2024 · Located in the old town at the centre of Vienna, the Hofburg area covers a collection of former imperial and court buildings occupied by the ruling Habsburg dynasty between the 13th and early 20th centuries. The complex is not a standalone palace in the sense of a Versailles.
Originally a medieval fortified castle dating from the 13th century, the Hofburg was extended by each emperor. The sprawling, asymmetric complex which extends over 240,000 m² consists of 18 wings, 19 courtyards and 2,600 rooms in which nearly 5,000 people still work and live today.
