Plot. In an unnamed Swedish city, ten year-old Karl Lejon has found out that he is going to die from an unspecified pulmonary disease (most likely tuberculosis). His adored big brother, 13-year-old Jonatan, calms him down and tells him that in the afterlife, all men will go to a land known as Nangijala. One day, a fire breaks out in the Lejon home.

The story behind The Brothers Lionheart. At the Northern Cemetery in Stockholm, Astrid saw the stone erected for the Bernström Brothers, who both died very young. And at the Vimmerby cemetery, Astrid read, "Here rest the infant brothers Fahlén, deceased 1860."
It was a gravestone on Vimmerby churchyard that gave Astrid the idea for the eternally topical story of the Brothers Lionheart, her second most translated book. The stone said: “Here rest the frail brothers Fahlén, died 1860”. She then knew that it was to become a story about death and two brothers.
