Mar 5, 2020 · While we may never know the true identity of the Man in the Iron Mask, we can make a few guesses based on what we do know. Before taking up residence at the dreaded Bastille, he was held in a small prison off the coast of Cannes called Sainte-Marguerite. It was first constructed in 1617, but it didn’t become a state prison until 1685.

The strict measures taken to keep his imprisonment secret resulted in a long-lasting legend about his identity.

- Dauger or Danger? The mysterious prisoner was a man named Eustache Dauger or Danger. The first version of his name could be an error or the result of a badly formed ‘u’, for variants of Danger (d’Anger, d’Angers, Dangers) with an ‘n’ appear most frequently in the official correspondence.
- Eustache was kept in secret. Eustache’s ordeal began on 19 July 1669 with his arrest in Calais by Alexandre de Vauroy, sergeant major of Dunkirk. He was taken in stages with a small escort to Pignerol, a journey of some three weeks.
- Whose prisoner? Although the original lettre de cachet authorising his arrest stated that Louis XIV was dissatisfied with Eustache’s behaviour, he may not have been Louis’s prisoner.
The legendary writer Voltaire was imprisoned in the Bastille in 1717 and claimed the prisoner wore a mask of iron since 1661. He suggested the man was the illegitimate brother of Louis XIV. It has been said that the Man in the Iron Mask was the son of Anne of Austria and Cardinal Mazarin, and therefore an illegitimate half-brother of King Louis XIV, an idea transformed into a book by Alexandre Dumas called The Vicomte de Bragelonne.
