The event program has varied over the years as the popularity of certain types and models of boats changed. The first woman to ever compete at the Olympic Games was a sailor.

Jul 30, 2024 · For the first time in Olympic history, this year's Summer Games are featuring an equal number of male and female athletes (5,250 of each). In sailing, a total of 33 Olympic medals will be awarded across ten different events; two are mixed sex events (Mixed Dinghy and Mixed Multihull), while the other eight are split evenly down the middle.
