May 2, 2024 · Well, the first step in understanding what is composition in art is to understand the 7 basic principles of art & design: 1. Balance. Balance refers to the weight of the visual elements of a composition. If a composition has a good sense of balance, it will give off the feeling of stability and will evoke pleasant and, even, comforting feelings.
Incongruity means out of place — something that doesn't fit in its location or situation. The art show patrons couldn't help but chuckle at the incongruity of a toilet sitting in the middle of an exhibition of Renaissance paintings.

- Unity: Do all the parts of the composition feel as if they belong together, or does something feel stuck on, awkwardly out of place?
- Balance: Balance is the sense that the painting "feels right" and not heavier on one side. Having a symmetrical arrangement adds a sense of calm, whereas an asymmetrical arrangement creates a more dynamic feeling.
