A Dark Night's Passing (暗夜行路, An'ya kōro) is the only full-length novel by Japanese writer Naoya Shiga. It was published in serialised form in the magazine Kaizō between 1921 and 1937. This novel, written in the I-novel style, is a semi-autobiographical/confessional novel about Kensaku Tokito, a would-be novelist, who struggles to settle down, to find his place and to come to terms with his life and the world round him.
May 20, 2023 · ~ Naoya Shiga, A Dark Night’s Passing. The novel, however, does not reduce itself to a mere chronicle of a young man’s life and the complexities of his family. Through the story of Tokitō, Shiga managed to subtly underscore the plights of the tortured artist.
Shiga gives us lots of details of Kensaku’s inner torment and his struggles to find peace with the world, with his family, with women and with his art. He cannot settle down. He finds it difficult to concentrate. He feels a certain distance between the world and himself. In short, he is the typical twentieth century literary hero.
