- Count Dracula. A centuries-old vampire and Transylvanian nobleman, Count Dracula inhabits a crumbling castle in the Carpathian Mountains. Beneath a veneer of aristocratic charm, the count possesses a dark and evil soul.
- Van Helsing. A Dutch professor, described by his former pupil Dr. Seward as “a philosopher and metaphysician, and one of the most advanced scientists of his day.”
- Jonathan Harker. A solicitor, or lawyer, whose firm sends him to Transylvania to conclude a real estate transaction with Dracula. Young and naïve, Harker quickly finds himself a prisoner in the castle and barely escapes with his life.
- Mina Murray. Jonathan Harker’s fiancée. Mina is a practical young woman who works as a schoolmistress. Eventually victimized by Dracula herself, Mina is also the best friend of the count’s first victim in the novel, Lucy Westenra.
Van Helsing views his pursuit of Dracula with an air of grandiosity. He envisions his band as “ministers of God’s own wish,” and assures his comrades that “we go out as the old knights of the Cross to redeem more.”
Four centuries later, Van Helsing killed Dracula, and later came to London to solve the case of Jack the Ripper, eventually discovering that the murderers were mentally controlled by demons from another world. In 1902 he worked together with the resurrected Dracula to prevent the assassination of King Edward VII.
The ‘Dracula‘ book is a horror story, and Bran Stocker utilizes a number of techniques not only to convey this horror but ground it within probable, realistic settings. Stocker is able to create tension through clever use of forebodings, world-building, and imageries.
Van Helsing is described as a “man of power” by Mina Harker. Van Helsing’s strong belief in the supernatural and religion make him the direct opposite of Dracula: Dracula uses “children of the night” to do his bidding and uses objects that are normally associated with uncleanliness such as his boxes of dirt
