Amakusa and its surrounding islands offer an abundance of beaches, hot springs, and marine activities like fishing, scuba, snorkeling, wakeboarding and more. Nearby Goshoura Island is referred to as the "island of dinosaurs" and has a host of museums and fossil sites to explore, while the islands of Tsukinoshima and Hogashima offer glass-bottom boat rides.
The Amakusa Islands, linked by five bridges and by ferry services, are part of Unzen-Amakusa National Park. The archipelago was long the gateway for Western culture and was an early centre of Christianity. Following the massacre of Japanese Christians in the Shimabara Rebellion (1637–38), the islands became a refuge for remaining Christians.
