The Avengers are a team of fictional superheroes and the protagonists of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) media franchise, based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963.

The Avengers are a team of super heroes in the Marvel Universe. Despite starting in its own corner of Earth-616, it expanded over time and has, since its creation, featured a large number of characters in a variety of combinations, with a vast majority of heroes in the Marvel Universe being an Avenger at some point in their history.
This list also includes the numerous spin-off Avengers teams that were at some point officially considered part of the group. These teams are, in alphabetical order:

All of these members helped form the team in The Avengers vol. 1 #1 (September 1963), responding to an attack by Loki.
