Nov 9, 2023 · There are dozens of Arabic dialects, and here we'll compare just 3: Moroccan Arabic, Egyptian Arabic, and Syrian Arabic. These dialects have large speaker populations, are widely represented in the media, and are found in distinct geographical locations.
Arabic dialectologists formerly distinguished between just two groups: the Mashriqi (eastern) dialects, east of Libya which includes the dialects of Arabian Peninsula, Mesopotamia, Levant, Egypt, Sudan, and the Maghrebi (western) dialects which includes the dialects of North Africa west of Egypt. - Egyptian. The Egyptian dialect is the Arab world's most spoken Arabic dialect with close to 100 million people using it in everyday life and tens of millions more outside of the country familiar with it, as a result of the popularity of Egyptian media.
- Mesopotamian. Mesopotamian Arabic is spoken in Iraq and Arabic-speaking areas of Iran, as well as parts of Syria, Kuwait, and southeastern Turkey. The dialect contains influences from languages spoken in Mesopotamia in ancient times and today, including Sumerian, Akkadian, Persian, Kurdish, and Greek.
- Levantine. The Levantine dialect, known in Arabic as Shami is spoken by 38 million people worldwide. Varieties of the dialect are spoken in the Levant region, which includes; Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine, as well as among small Arabic-speaking communities in Cyprus and Turkey.
- Maghrebi. The Maghrebi (western) dialect spoken in North African states west of Egypt has a reputation for being difficult to understand among eastern Arabic speakers but that is a claim many North Africans would take issue with.
- Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) As mentioned above, Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) has emerged from the idea of creating one common Arabic language. Today, MSA is the standard version in written Arabic.
- Egyptian Arabic. Egyptian Arabic is one of the most widely spoken dialects of Arabic. Egypt is the largest Arab country by population with over 105 million inhabitants.
- Levantine Arabic. Levantine Arabic (Amiyya) is the second most popular Arabic dialect. There are over 20 million native speakers in the so-called Levant, ranging from Syria, Lebanon, Palestine to Jordan.
- Iraqi Arabic. Iraqi Arabic, also known as Mespotamian Arabic, is widely spoken in Iraq and parts of southeastern Turkey and northeastern Syria. What’s interesting about Iraqi Arabic is that there are a few sounds that don’t exist in the Arabic alphabet and other Arabic dialects (neither in MSA nor any spoken dialect).
