Also the sounds [ts], [dz] (both spelled z) are always geminated when occurring between vowels, yet their gemination is sometimes shown, redundantly, by doubling the z as, e.g., in pizza [ˈpittsa]. In Japanese, non-nasal gemination ( sokuon ) is denoted by placing the "small" variant of the syllable Tsu ( っ or ッ ) between two syllables, where the end syllable must begin with a consonant.
Jan 3, 2004 · All vowels are short when the following consonant is geminated; when 〈k〉 and 〈z〉 are geminated they become 〈ck〉 and 〈tz〉. Mainly stressed vowels are in this way marked as short, plus vowels other than 〈e〉 in light suffixes when they lose their final position: -in –> -innen , -nis –> -nisse , although not -ig –>* -igge .

But this isn’t quite true. A doubled consonant does sometimes indicate a different sound compared with a single letter, such as the /z/ sound made by the letter s in words like rise or advertise; think of the difference between his and hiss. Doubled consonants also sometimes govern how the vowel is pronounced, like holy and holly, or tiny and ...
If a vowel is not marked with a diacritic, its length must be determined by its environment; the rules vary a bit according to dialect. In all dialects, only stressed vowels may be long; unstressed vowels are always short. An unmarked (stressed) vowel is long: in the last syllable of a word when no consonant follows: da /dɑː/ (good).
In §2.3, we will provide evidence for this prediction by discussing languages that avoid long vowels in syllables closed by a geminate (CVVG), but do not generally avoid long vowels in closed syllables (CVVC). We hold off until §3 the discussion of geminate behavior in weight-sensitive stress systems.

After the palatalization of /k ɡ/ before front vowels, many Romance languages simplified /kw ɡw/ to /k ɡ/ in this context, creating new sequences of /k ɡ/ + front vowel. As a result, in a number of languages the Latin spellings qu gu became reinterpreted as a means of indicating that a consonant was velar despite being followed by a front vowel.
