May 11, 2023 · If there are well-trained mathematicians working in other sectors of society, that can only be good for mathematics in the long, long run. I know there are people who don’t think this way. Some of my colleagues think that, well, we train all these students, give them a Ph.D. and even give them a postdoctoral position or something, and if they go work for Google, it’s a loss of our effort.
