Feb 25, 2023 · The Best Bird Hunting Dogs. 1. German Wirehaired Pointer. Hunters looking for a skilled pointing dog will be impressed with the ruggedly intelligent German Wirehair breed. These dogs perform well in upland search, point, or flush. They are also excellent retrievers of waterfowls, whether on land or water.
- German Shorthaired Pointer. Just about everyone who bird hunts and their uncle owns a German shorthaired pointer (GSP), and for good reason. GSPs are bird-finding machines that also serve as good retrievers on downed or crippled birds and capable in the water as well.
- English Setter. English setters are the gentleman's bird dog. They were originally bred as a grouse dog in England and saw great popularity among eastern ruffed grouse hunters early on in their introduction to America.

- Chesapeake Bay Retriever. We gotta say, we love the cute nickname of this bird dog breed: Chessie! This medium-sized dog originated in the United States in the early 1800s.
- Boykin Spaniel. If you're from the state of South Carolina, you may be familiar with Boykin spaniels since they are the official state pup! This bird dog breed is medium-sized with a beautiful brown coat, known for their super-affectionate personality and skilled hunting abilities.
