2. • • You could try and hunt down an original Joypad on eBay or you can modify one of the other plentiful compatible controllers out there to work for you instead. Natively the Sega MS controller will work flawlessly with the Atari 2600 but due to the two button design of the Atari 7800, the pinouts are not compatible with this Sega controller.

   Dec 2, 2023 · I don't own a Master System or any Master System controllers, but I can confirm that Genesis controllers don't work. I tried both a 3-button and a 6-button that I've had for eons, but they still work on a Genesis or Genesis clone console, but not on the 2600+.

   Jan 21, 2024 · There was a gamepad for the Atari 2600 Jr. that looks like the Sega Master System pad. It may works on the Atari ST, too. The pad is quite common here in Europe. That thumb joystick can be removed, so you have an ordinary d-pad.

   • They all work well with a variety of games. The paddle controller in the Ranger works... okay. I still prefer an Atari paddle in good condition, but that can be hard to find. From what I understand the Sega Master system controller works, but the Sega Genesis controller does not.

   • Anything that is wired the same as the original 2600 sticks should work just fine. Are you looking for standard second controllers or special controllers? Like John Stamos Mullet said, standard joysticks that are 2600 compatible work. I personally tested 3 standard joysticks from Atari Flashback consoles, they all work.

   Can I use a 6 button controller on a Sega A8?

   • the Sega Genesis (named Sega Mega Drive here in Europe) 3-button and 6-button controllers both work fine on the A8. I am using a six-button controller on my A8 for several years now, without any problems. Since the A8 only supports one fire-button, one has to press the B-button on the Sega Genesis controller (all other buttons don`t do anything).

    I saw a YouTube video long before I had a 2600 that said that you could use Sega's 8 and 16 bit controllers as a replacement for the original Atari controllers. But they also warned that there exists some controllers with the same plug, that is wired differently and can damage the console.
