      • Shields can't be used alongside a two-handed weapon. They can, however, be used with a versatile weapon (so long as you're using only one hand for the weapon).

  1. Sep 13, 2016 · In my group, we've been working with the understanding that you can wear a shield and fight with a two-handed weapon, the assumption being that you only get the +2 AC if you're actively wielding the shield with 1 hand. We're treating "wielding" a shield as different from "wearing" a shield.

  2. You wear one "armour" item and hold one "weapon" item or "shield" item in each hand. "Weapon" items with the two-handed tag take both hands, so you can't use a shield item. Unless you are a thrikeen.

  3. Generally, no. You'd need one hand to hold the shield. According to the PHB: Two-Handed. This weapon requires two hands when you attack with it. This property is relevant only when you attack with the weapon, not when you simply hold it. You could hold the weapon with a shield, but not attack with it as it requires two hands to swing.

  4. Sep 26, 2017 · This allows the character with a versatile weapon to drop a punch shield, change their grip on their versatile weapon, and attack 2 handed in the same action. Picking the shield back up and re-wielding it still takes a full action.

  5. If you wanted to, for flavor purposes, you could reasonably house rule that if a player wants to use a two-handed weapon using only a single hand, they could lower the damage die one step down (d12 to d10, etc...) in order to accommodate a shield.

  6. This means you can't use this hand to hold a weapon or attack with a two-handed weapon. You can carry a Shield as equipment, on your back, but you don't benefit from the AC bonus. To gain or lose the AC bonus you need to spend an Action to Don/Doff it.

  7. Apr 7, 2018 · A shield is made from wood or metal and is carried in one hand. Based on this wording, a shield is carried in your hand, which means that you cannot carry another object in your hand. As a DM making a ruling, I would probably allow some leeway, but the wording is pretty clear.
