Feb 26, 2016 · The compressed air in front of the plane exerts a much larger than usual force on the plane. There is a noticeable increase in the aerodynamic drag on the plane at this point, hence the notion of breaking through the "sound barrier." When a plane exceeds the speed of sound it is said to be supersonic. Anything exceeding the speed of sound ...
Mar 11, 2002 · AN F/A -18 HORNET BREAKS THE SOUND BARRIER in the skies ... the sound speed also decreases, so for a plane flying at 35,000 feet¿where the ambient temperature is ¿54 C¿the local speed of sound ...
Feb 3, 2022 · The ISS's avg altitude is 250 miles, but it can get as low as 174 miles, and we don't hear any booms even then. I assume then that the altitude where the boom goes away is somewhere between 60,000 ft (where the Concorde flew and did for sure emit a boom) and 918,000 ft (174 miles, the lowest altitude of the ISS, which for sure doesn't emit a boom).
It was in the X-1 that Chuck Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier in level flight on 14 October 1947, flying at an altitude of 45,000 ft (13.7 km). George Welch made a plausible but officially unverified claim to have broken the sound barrier on 1 October 1947, while flying an XP-86 Sabre .
Nov 11, 2021 · NASA's predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), believed that it was possible for propeller-driven aircraft to break the sound barrier eventually. In the 1940s, NACA invested heavily in new designs for propellers through a high-speed propeller research program. Over time, it was able to design propeller blades ...
Oct 27, 2022 · The sonic boom occurs as the aircraft reaches the speed of sound, or Mach 1, relative to the surrounding air - not measured in ground speed. This is because the speed of sound changes with altitude and temperature. At sea level and in standard atmospheric conditions, the speed of sound is 345 meters per second (equivalent to 770 mph or 1239 kph).
