Nov 17, 2018 · as someone who has prepurchased games before , you just have the game in your library like you bought it and either on release or in very rare cases before release you can download the game and play it. once you "prepurchase" you already own the game , however until the release you cant play it and you cant download it. #8.
And even when preload is an option, you still need to unpack. Which for a 50GB game can take awhile. Most big budget titles let you pre-load. But you could just wait with the purchase until they announce the preloading. For some, but not all games, certain assets can be downloaded to your PC before the release date.

Then once the game comes out, it'll turn into your everyday Steam library entry and you can download it. Not entirely sure if they send out an email when the game comes out. Been years since I last preordered a Steam game. Sometimes they'll also let you preload it a view days in advance.
