Feb 1, 2023 · Although the identity of Sarah’s mother is never revealed in the game, we know that she and Joel were married for a period of time, but there’s no saying for how long.
Since Sarah lives with Joel, it's likely there is zero contact with her mother. If her mother had died, it's likely there would be artefacts to her memory in the house. The cold-hearted, emotionless Joel we see in the game is a product of what happens to Sarah at the end of the intro.
If you look around Sarah's room there's not even a single photo of her mother. If her mother had died Sarah would at least have a photo of her but there's none. Sarah was an accidental pregnancy and Joel put his hand up to raise her own his own without the mother being involved at all.
