- A carcinogenic chemical known as nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) was found in town wells, and a pipeline was built to bring water from Waterloo to Elmira. That pipeline still operates to this day and cleanup efforts include what is known as a pump-and-treat process to remove NDMA and chlorobenzene, another carcinogen, from the water.

The town’s water was shut off and citizens subsisted on bottled. water until a pipeline to Waterloo’s aquifer was built.
