- More than a mere jut into the Seattle skyline, the Space Needle provides a stage for many seasonal events, including a stunning New Year's Eve fireworks display, and it’s a fabulous place to take out-of-town visitors (locals probably either have seen it already or think it’s too touristy to check out, which is only half true…sure, it’s touristy, but it’s definitely worth a visit).

As a first-time visitor to Seattle, I felt obligated to visit the Space Needle. Even though it was a gray day, the views were still interesting and the revolving clear floor offered some fun selfie opportunities. Good activity to combine with a visit to the Chihuly Garden and the Museum of Pop Culture. Take the monorail from downtown.

The idea for Needle was first doodled on a napkin by Seattle hotel executive Edward “Eddie” Carlson during a visit to Stuttgart, Germany in 1959. He saw the potential of a Space Age tower as a symbol for the 1962 fair and the Seattle skyline.
