May 12, 2023 · Short answer: We rarely add “new” words. We wait to add a word to the dictionary until we’ve determined that it has gained relatively widespread use and is likely to stick around. Also, there are a lot of words to keep track of, so sometimes it takes us a while.
We collect citations of new words. Each example of a word becomes a citation that is collected with its context and source and then keyed into a searchable database that constitutes the first stage of research for the dictionary.
In each case, the definer decides on the best course of action by reading through the citations and using the evidence in them to adjust entries or create new ones. Before a new word can be added to the dictionary, it must have enough citations to show that it is widely used.
