A large number of studies show that women nowadays have surpassed men in educational attainment in most Western societies (Buchmann & DiPrete, Citation 2006; Buchmann, DiPrete, & McDaniel, Citation 2008; Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD], Citation 2012).

In 2016, 40.7% of young women aged 25 to 34 reported having a bachelor's degree or higher, up from 32.8% in 2006. By comparison, 29.1% of young men aged 25 to 34 reported having a bachelor's degree or higher, up from 24.8% in 2006.
The substantial gender gap in educational attainment for recent cohorts of men and women cannot be explained by differences in observable parental investments, measurable skills, or behaviors that may reflect skills, even in rich data such as that provided by the Add Health Study and even in a relatively homogeneous sample of young adults.
