My guess is that pets gain xp equal to a percentage of the hunter's received xp. Pets do not play into player experience gain. Pets gain experience from mobs killed by the hunter that would yield experience to the hunter (enemy level isn’t gray). Edit: I had more info on how pets gain experience but have removed it because I goofed it a bit.
Sep 26, 2015 · When battling for xp, your leveling pet will get a little less xp if it is within 4 levels (lower) than your opponents. Ideally, you can get your pets to around 20 with battling, and then get them to 25 with battle stones. Also, if you buy in bulk, it's cheaper to buy Mystery Bag than Flawless Battle-Training Stone.
