- Town pets can appear the dawn after the specific pet license (Cat, Dog, Bunny) is purchased from the Zoologist. Town pets do not require their own housing as they can share a house with another NPC. There are currently 3 town pets available in Terraria that all come in a variety of different colors.

A house (or home) is a structure built by the player that town NPCs require in order to spawn, with one house required per NPC. A structure must meet several requirements in order to function as a house (see details below).
The Dog's house can be changed, as with any other NPC, however the Dog can share the same house as another NPC. The Dog needs a 2-tile floor space to sleep on occasionally; it may not move into a house if that space is not available. The Dog can be talked to with the ⚷ Interact button, like any other town NPC.

Town Slimes are a type of town pet. They can be moved in by players, similar to the Town Cat, Town Dog, and Town Bunny. They also count for Pylon requirements and reduce enemy spawn rate, and do not affect NPC happiness in any way.

Pets have the same requirements as NPCs, IIRC. (Except that a house can have both an NPC and a pet.) Make housing for every possible NPC, and assign them. Then you can have a separate room for you and a town pet.

Town NPCs generally walk around during the day. They remain still in their assigned houses at night and during certain events.
