Villagers tend to not travel far from their beds in a large village unless the job site or the nearest gossip site is far from their beds. Villagers, like other mobs, can find paths around obstructions, avoid walking off cliffs of heights greater than 3 blocks, and avoid some blocks that cause harm.

Apr 26, 2019 · I experimented with this. My home base is nowhere near a village. I traveled very far to a village, kidnapped two villagers (one at a time) got them back at my base, locked them in an enclosed area with 10 beds all in a row.
In short, a new bed/profession block will be added to a village if 1) it's within 32 blocks of the current center, 2) it's closer to the center than any existing POI, or 3) it's near enough that an existing villager can walk over to it and claim it.
if the villager moves too far away, the village will drop that POI off the list and the village size will shrink, until the villager moves closer. If you want to guarantee that villages will remain two separate villages, you will need to have at least 65 blocks between the POI's.
