All food premises, including home-based food businesses, are subject to the requirements of the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA), the Food Premises Regulation and periodic inspection by inspectors from their local public health unit.
Requirements for operating a food premises in Ontario are outlined in Regulation 493 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act. Public health inspectors conduct inspections of premises serving food to the public under the authority of this Act and its Regulation.

Ontario’s Food Premises Regulations (section 32) under the Ontario Health Protection and Promotion Act requires food businesses to employ staff that have obtained Food Handler Certification. To receive Food Handler Certification, Food Handlers are required to complete an Ontario approved Food Handler Certification course.
