Nov 16, 2021 · Amidst the social injustice and moral decadence of Amos’ time, Amos identified a conspicuously religious people who were zealous in the worship of YHWH and actively involved at the various worship centres in Bethel, Gilgal and Beersheba (Amos 5:1–17, 5c, 27), but who, ironically indulged in the unethical behaviours proscribed by the law.
God, through Amos, expresses disdain for empty rituals and false worship. He calls for justice and righteousness, emphasizing their significance over superficial sacrifices. The chapter concludes with a prophecy of exile for the unrepentant Israelites.
Amos 8:14. They that swear by the sin of Samaria — That is, by the calf which Jeroboam set up as an object of worship at Beth-el, not far from Samaria, committing a great sin in so doing, and making Israel to sin.
Amos challenged empty religious rituals and highlighted the significance of genuine, heartfelt worship. He emphasized the need for true repentance and acknowledged that external rituals alone were not sufficient for a righteous relationship with God.
