  1. Aug 29, 2011 · You won't be able to use VC++-generated LIB files, so you can't use MinGW's linker, ld, to link static libraries without recompiling the library code as a MinGW A archive. You can link with closed-source DLLs; however, you will need to export the symbols of the DLL as a DEF file and use dlltool to make the corresponding A archive (similar to the VC++ LIB file for each DLL).

There are three reasons why you might want to use MinGW on Windows. The first is simply compiler compatibility. We all love MSVC, but the reality is that some codebases are designed from the ground up under the expectation that they will be built with GCC. This is especially true for many cross-platform projects. Porting these codebases to support ...

Getting started with MinGW is simple once you have installed the latest Visual Studio Preview. First, you will need to make sure that you select the C++ workload when you install Visual Studio. Next, you will need to download MinGW itself. There are actually many ways to install MinGW. If you are particularly adventurous you can build it from sourc...

It has been possible to use GCC based compilers with Visual Studio projectsfor some time already, but many cross-platform projects that build with MinGW on Windows are not organized into Solution and Visual C++ project files. Creating these assets for a real-world project can be time consuming. To streamline onboarding cross-platform projects into ...

Once you have set up IntelliSense (with “MINGW_PREFIX” and its related environment variables defined and added to “PATH”), building with MinGW is quite simple. First, you will need to create a build task. Right click your build script (or any other file you would like to associate with the task) and select “Configure Tasks”: This will create a “tas...

While we have discussed MinGW specifically in this post, it is worth keeping in mind that very little of the content above is specific to MinGW. These topics apply equally well to other compilers and build environments so long as they can produce binaries that can be debugged with GDB. With minimal modification, the instructions under the “Use MinG...

  2. MSVC code generation quality is almost on par with GCC and Clang. It doesn't quite support C99 and probably never will. The toolchain is not nearly as powerful or flexible as Mingw-w64. For instance, import libs are still mandatory (for outdated historical reasons), unlike Mingw-w64 where they're completely optional. 16.

  3. MinGW is an alternative C/C++ compiler that works with all Python versions up to 3.4. Install Minimalist GNU For Windows into C:\MinGW. Open MinGW Installation Manager, check mingw32-base and mingw32-gcc-g++, and Apply Changes in the Installation menu. Add C:\MinGW\bin to the PATH environment variable.

  4. Example: Install MinGW-x64 on Windows. To understand the process, let's install Mingw-w64 via MSYS2. Mingw-w64 is a popular, free toolset on Windows. It provides up-to-date native builds of GCC, Mingw-w64, and other helpful C++ tools and libraries. Download using this direct link to the MinGW installer.

  5. CMake, Clang, mingw, and more. Open a codebase from any environment and get to work right away. Use MSBuild with the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler or a 3rd party toolset like CMake with Clang or mingw to build and debug your code right in the IDE. Benefit from a first-class CMake experience. Bring your C++ code to Visual Studio.

  7. Nov 7, 2011 · GCC works and can be used with any IDE other than Visual Studio. Even Visual Studio Code can use GCC. Code::Blocks, Eclipse IDE for C/C++ developers, CLion, Notepad++ and even the good ol' tool we've always known, Notepad works with GCC. And finally, on a PC with low disk space, installing Visual Studio's "Desktop Development with C++" is ...
