  1. Mar 26, 2001 · The following is my best understanding of Spitfire engine tuning and for the most part should obviously not be regarded as the opinion of a professional engine builder. Feel free to strongly disagree with any of the points I make and if you choose to explore in practise any of the following always seek professional advise from the engineering shop you employ before embarking on any expensive ...

  2. Oct 21, 2010 · Re: 1500 engine performance mods. The 123 ignition (distributor) is a modification that employs spark balancing, like used in formula race cars. It will smooth out an engine and pull locked up hp to the fore. In addition there are no springs or weights to fool with.

  3. Feb 4, 2024 · Re: Basic tuning, from step 1. First, check to make sure the ignition wires are in the correct order. The firing order is 1-3-4-2, and the distributor turns COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. My 65 was wired incorrectly when I got it, someone thought the distributor turned clockwise.

The first step is buying the right parts. The key here is getting the entire setup, including the linkages. Ideally, you’d also get carburetors that aren’t worn out. Remember, these parts may be nearing their 40th birthday, so go with a reputable dealer. In our case, Quantum Mechanics sold us a brand-new downpipe to match the European exhaust manif...

Freshening a carburetor is not as scary as it sounds, and companies like Quantum Mechanics supply the necessary kits. The process is mostly a function of carefully cleaning, disassembling and reassembling each carburetor while installing new gaskets. The idea is to remove all the accumulated junk, especially from critical areas like the float bowl ...

After refreshing the carburetors, the next step is simply to replace the intake and exhaust manifolds with the European-spec pieces. The exhaust manifold goes on first, underneath the intake manifold. Use new gaskets and properly clean all mating surfaces. Bolting on the new carburetors is easy, and since this is a factory setup, the throttle cable...

Theory is great, but how much does this swap really help performance? Before the swap—and with the original single-carb unit properly tuned—our Spitfire produced 49 horsepower and 66 lb.-ft. of torque at the rear wheels, as measured on a chassis dyno. Remember, these cars were optimistically rated at about 70 horsepower at the crank. By the time yo...

  4. Jan 15, 2010 · Posted January 15, 2010. When installed in the Midget, the 1500 engine has a reputation for throwing a rod through the side of the block. I heard that this was due to oil cooling problems - the air flow around the bottom of the engine is much restricted in a midget compared to a Spitfire. The 1500 is not a revvy engine, unlike the Triumph 1300 ...

  5. Jan 4, 2015 · The obvious thing to do is to get a better camshaft, high flowing exhaust bits, high flowing air filters, bigger jets (or a different carb), flat top pistons, and stronger valve springs. As things like this would make the engine easily produce well over 80bhp when tuned accordingly, money is an issue. My proposition is to get high flow filters ...
