Feb 20, 2019 · Every outdoor antenna should be grounded. No exceptions. If it’s up on the roof and it’s made of metal, it should be grounded. Never mind if that antenna has been up there for 50 years and it’s always been fine. It’s never too late to do the right thing. Why do lightning strikes happen? (Beware, I’m simplifying a lot of this stuff.
Apr 27, 2021 · Lightning seeks the best path to ground. The path of least resistance to ground. If lightning strikes your antenna, the path might go down the feed line and to your radio. The radio will be destroyed. It could even start a fire. Or cause injury. Lightning Protection For Antennas. Lightning protection is important.
I got my Technician license in May and now I am moving on to General in August and that means HF which entails antennas and I want to know about lighting protection. Were I live lightning is a very rare thing so do I need lightning protection with a dipole antenna. I don't have any tall vertical antennas planned for the conceivable future.
Yes, unplug electronics. Yes, grounding increases the odds of the antenna being preferentially hit by lightning (intead of the roof), but (in my opinion) grounding minimizes the damage, especially for nuisance/minor strikes (along with other light duty protective devices like surge protectors). Grounding the antenna is heavy duty protection.
Mar 29, 2013 · Lightning protection for amateur radio antennas. To protect yourself, home, and your radio equipment you need to install some basic lightning protections into your antenna system. Most lightning protection systems serve two purposes: to channel lightning’s electrical energy to a suitable ground, and to keep lightning energy from entering your ...
Dec 13, 2018 · Horizontal wire antennas may also present a lightning hazard but to a lesser degree, depending on height and exposure. These should similarly be disconnected during a storm. Play it safe and disconnect all outdoor antennas during a thunderstorm and use your VHF/UHF indoor backup as needed. Lightning protection is a big and sometimes ...

Lightning Protection in General Lightning protection must be examined from four distinct directions. First off, the place where the antenna is mounted (such as on a tower) is important. Then there must be input protection from the lightning strike itself, typically in the form of a huge and rapid build up of voltage and current at the input to ...
