Aug 21, 2017 · Still, it's worth asking why there biology does (to some extent) have "species" that don't interbreed; Mayr's definition has stuck because it is useful. The first thing to consider is how remarkable it is that any two individuals (of the same species) can interbreed at all. It's not the default option!
Aug 28, 2018 · The biologist Ernst Mayr proposed in 1942 that a species is a population of organisms that can all interbreed with each other, and which either cannot or do not interbreed with anything else.
Aug 21, 2014 · Scientists still don’t have a definitive answer. Simply defining species based on genetics doesn’t solve the problem. As Wolf and others have shown, the answer depends on where in the genome ...
Oct 31, 2023 · Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\): Species Similarity & Reproduction: Species that appear similar may not be able to reproduce. The (a) African fish eagle is similar in appearance to the (b) bald eagle, but the two birds are members of different species. Populations of species share a gene pool: a collection of all the variants of genes in the species.
Wild animals use various strategies to prevent inbreeding and maintain genetic diversity.
A species is an actually or potentially interbreeding population that does not interbreed with other such populations when there is opportunity to do so. 22.2: Natural Selection and Reproductive Isolation - Biology LibreTexts

Jan 23, 2017 · Members of one species is reproductively isolated from members of another species. (Thus species is naturally defined category.) Though invisible to us, there are several factors which act as reproductive barriers between two species. - Envirnmental barriers such as water bodies or mountains are external factors, but species isolation takes place mostly due to various biological factors. - I ...
