Light will diffract around anything, including a block. We simply don't observe this diffraction because most blocks are very large compared to the wavelength of light. One historically-famous example of diffraction around an object is Poisson's spot, in which diffraction around a circular disk is easily observed.
The most striking examples of diffraction are those that involve light; for example, the closely spaced tracks on a CD or DVD act as a diffraction grating to form the familiar rainbow pattern seen when looking at a disc.
Since the wavelengths of visible light range from approximately 390 to 770 nm, most objects do not diffract light significantly. However, situations do occur in which apertures are small enough that the diffraction of light is observable.
