Illumination, formerly known as Illumination Entertainment, is an American animation studio founded by Chris Meledandri in 2007 and is a division of Universal Pictures, [5] [6] [7] a division of Comcast through its wholly owned subsidiary NBCUniversal; Meledandri produces the films, while Universal finances and distributes them. [6]
Illumination is more practical about their bad, derivative movies. They make sure they have a hook to sell tickets and plenty of marketable elements (minions, etc.) to put in the trailers, and they generally keep their budgets fairly low by re-using assets and cutting corners.
Sony and Illumination have similar low budgets for movies but Sony is more willing to take risks and do something innovative. Illumination's movies aren't necessarily bad... but they feel too commercial.
Illumination has an exclusive financing and distribution partnership with Universal Pictures. In April 2016, it was announced that Universal's parent company and Comcast subsidiary, NBCUniversal , would purchase rival studio DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion.
