This design requires more water and lava, but it can repair more quickly than my design can. The timing does need to be adjusted, though, since you end up wasting a lot of time with the piston blocking the water and lava.
You would need to make it taller so that anyone with a bucket couldn't just walk up and remove one of the water sources. In any case, its possible to place blocks on the wall, and use them to divert the water, and then just placing blocks such that the lava is blocked.
Yes. The void space is achieved by disabling the corresponding pistons on all 4 walls. So I disable 2 pistons on each wall to allow for a 2x1x1 void zone where their projections intersect. If you disable more pistons, then you could allow for more "dead spaces" within the block.
