Snowfall occurs above layer 200 in old growth pine taiga. Snowfall also occurs in frozen ocean biomes, where it only occurs in certain locations, while it rains in others, as a result of a temperature gradient within the biome. In lush biomes, snowfall can occur only at layers above the block height limit.
- Snowy Plains. The Snowy plains biome contains some thick layers of snow. The only animal mobs found here are rabbits and polar bears, with strays being unique to this biome.
- Ice Spikes. This biome is a rare variant of the Snowy plains biome, with glaciers full of packed ice being found here. Mob spawning is the same as the snowy plains.
- Snowy Taiga. Similar to a regular Taiga biome, a large number of spruce trees can be found here. Also, wolves and foxes spawn naturally in this biome.
- Frozen River. When a river goes through a snowy biome, it creates a frozen river. These rivers have a layer of ice covering them.
Regular snowy plains are often separated from ice spikes or snow taigas by frozen rivers. Survival in snowy plains biomes is quite difficult due to the sparseness of the biome and the lack of animals; only polar bears and rabbits may naturally spawn here, though cows, sheep, pigs and horses may spawn as part of villages.
In snowy biomes or in cold biomes at higher altitudes, the weather can produce snow instead of rain. In snowy weather, snow generates on random blocks with a complete solid top surface at integer y-values, with a block light level of 9 or less, with the exception of ice and packed ice.
