Fans of emo pop/pop punk wanted something different than top 40 pop music, but Top 40 was what they were used to so they still needed something with the same sensibilities. Adult fans of the genres either embrace this or deny it.
emo is honestly super broad and one band legitimately classed as emo won’t sound anything like another one. I recommend Sunny Day Real Estate, The Little Explorer, Now She’s Gone, Rites of Spring, Mineral, Small Dog Frenzy, and Indian Summer. Reply reply. Revolverpsychedlic.

From what I have read online, most midwest emo songs are played on FACGCE guitar tuning.

He never referred brand new as emo hair metal. If you actually read the linked article Tom Mullen mentions popular emo bands of the early 00s like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and the other emo bands that were on MTV at that time as emo's hair metal.
Jul 14, 2021 · It was all just ‘punk.’. The term ‘emo’ was really just to distinguish bands who played introspective, as opposed to politically motivated outsider music. In addition to bands, there were a whole heap of zines which also explored personal topics as opposed to just band reviews or political stuff ( Doris comes to mind).

EDIT: it seems Sunny Day Real Estate, Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, and Rainer Maria also have 2. Taking Back Sunday has two in the top 25. Glad to see I’ll take you everywhere on the list.
Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta.
