Nov 22, 2020 · Right fielder - The right fielder should preferably be a left-handed thrower so that he can better cover and release the ball that is hit down the right field line. However, the strength of his throwing arm has got to be the most important consideration in placing a young man in right field.

- The Close Catching Infield
- The Inner Ring
- The Outfield
In terms of fielding positions, I like to divide the cricketfield into 3 parts: 1. The Close Catching Infield– This area contains the fielders that are the closest to the batsman. Everyone inside this ring will be about 15 yards away or closer! These are often specialist catching positions, with a bit less of a focus on saving runs! If you look at ...
Wicket Keeper
This is the most important fielding position, and one thatall teams have to fill! The wicket keeper stands behind the batsman, and isresponsible for catching the ball in their gloves if the batsman edges, missesor leaves the ball. The distance between the wicket keeper and the batsmanvaries depending on the speed of the bowler. If a professional fast bowler isbowling, you’ll see most wicket keepers stand approximately 20 metres away fromthe batsman. If a spinner is bowling, the wicket keeper...
The Slips
The slips are another vital area on a cricket field. There are actually 4 main fielding positions within the slips: 1st slip, 2nd slip, 3rd slip and 4th slip. However, not all of these positions need to be used at the same time! Slip fielders will usually set their position based on where the wicket keeper is standing. On most professional teams, the wicket keeper will often be a little closer to the batsman than 1st slip is. You can see this in the diagram below! Fielders in the slips will a...
Gully
The gully position is an extension to the line of slipfielders. So, a fielder who is in the gully position will be stood in front ofthe other slip fielders, but still remains on the same diagonal line as them.In some cases, there may be a slightly larger gap between the last slip fielderand the gully position than there is between each individual slip fielder. Thediagram below shows the gully position and its relationship with the slipregion! Here are a few scenarios where you may see the gul...
Point
The point fielding position is square of the wicket on the offside of the batsman. How far away from the bat they choose to stand depends onthe pace of the bowling. For example, if a professional fast bowler isoperating, the point fielder should probably consider keeping a good distancebetween themselves and the batsman. If a spinner or a significantly slowerbowler is bowling, the fielder may choose to bring themselves in a littlecloser. Often this decision will be made by the fielding captai...
Backward Point
The backward point position is almost identical to the pointposition, except for the fact it is slightly behind square of the wicket on theoff side! The diagram below will show you the relationship between the twopositions. A captain may decide to have a fielder at backward pointrather than point if a faster bowler is operating, or if there is a bit morepace and bounce in the pitch. These things will often lead to batsmen hittingcut shots slightly behind square if they choose to play that sho...
Mid-Off
The mid-off fielder should be positioned just a bit widerthan straight on the off side of the field. Check the diagram below if you wantto see the exact position! Fielders at mid-off are used to stop the batsman playing thedrive towards the long-off boundary. They are positioned close enough to thebat that they can stop the batsmen taking a single if the ball is hit towardsthem. A lot of shots travel through this area of the field, so captains shouldmake sure they post a competent fielder in...
Third Man
Third man is another position that lies on the boundary, behind square on the off side of the field. The position should be in line withwhere the slip fielders are or would be, which is basically just a little bitfiner than a 45-degree angle to the batsman. The picture below should explainwhat I’m talking about! If there are no slip fielders in place, you’ll see thisposition used a lot. That makes it more suitable for limited overs matcheswhere the slip fielders aren’t used as much! In test ma...
Deep Point
Deep point is the position that lies on the boundary, exactly square of the wicket on the off side. This can be seen in the followingdiagram! This is a defensive position, and as such there won’t bemany catches to take when you’re out there! Your main role will be to cover theboundary edge and stop the batsman playing square cut shots for 4.
Deep Backward Point
Deep backward point is a position on the boundary that isjust slightly behind square on the off side of the field. It is a relativelysimilar position to deep point, apart from the extra 10 or so metres that youwill have moved behind square! This diagram should show you the difference inthe two positions! The captain may choose to use a deep backward pointrather than a deep point if there is a little more pace in the pitch, or if thebatsman is playing the ball very late. These things mean that...
Sep 9, 2013 · My recommendation for a Left and Right Fielders is to maintain a depth of 270 to 280 feet under normal circumstances. This spot on the turf can be found with the knowledge that 1B/3B are 90 feet from Home Plate, the Infield/Outfield Cut is 125 feet from Home Plate, and the Outfield Wall is typically 330 feet from Home Plate.

- Wicketkeeper. The most important position on the cricket field is of a Wicketkeeper. He collects the ball after balls from the bowler and the outfielders and, in a sense, is at the center of the proceeding for the fielding team.
- Slips. The slip is a position right beside the wicketkeeper on the off side. There can be a slip on the leg side as well – called as the leg slip – but it is not a regular position.
- Third Man. There are various versions of the story as to why this fielding position is called Third Man. One says there used to be only three slips in old days but as the ball started flying off the edge of the bat over the slip cordon, the third slip was sent back called as the “Third man”
- Gully. Gully, as the name suggests, is the area between the slip and point slightly farther from the batsman but inside the 30-yard circle. Gully, by default, refers to the field position on the off side of the batsman, however, there is also a leg gully that is employed as a part of the plan to catch batsman off his pads.
Jun 21, 2024 · The cow corner fielder is generally positioned slightly straighter than the deep mid-wicket fielder. The player at cow corner is responsible for covering ground to both their left and right in order to prevent boundaries.
Left Fielder. Right handed batter: If a right handed hitter hits a fly ball to left field, the action on the baseball most likely will be going left to right from the outfielders perspective (or hooking from the batters perspective).
